The Wontumi Campaign Team has clarified that recent comments by Mr. Justice Appiah-Antwi expressing support for Mr. John Boadu do not represent the official position of Chairman Wontumi or the campaign team.
In a statement issued by its Communications and Media Directorate, the campaign said Mr. Appiah-Antwi spoke in his personal capacity and had no mandate to declare support for Mr. Boadu on behalf of the wider campaign.
The clarification follows public comments attributed to Mr. Appiah-Antwi, a known ally of the Wontumi Campaign, in which he reportedly declared his support for Mr. John Boadu and suggested that the broader Wontumi Campaign Team was prepared to work for his candidature.
The campaign, however, stressed that no decision, directive, endorsement or agreement has been made by Chairman Wontumi or the campaign to support Mr. Boadu.
“Mr. Appiah-Antwi is entitled to support whichever candidate he believes in. However, that personal decision must not be presented as a collective decision or commitment of the Wontumi Campaign Team,” the statement said.
The campaign acknowledged that Mr. Appiah-Antwi may have his own reasons for supporting Mr. Boadu, including identifying leadership qualities that he believes resonate with those he has admired in Chairman Wontumi.
It nevertheless maintained that such a personal conviction cannot automatically become the position of the campaign.
The Wontumi Campaign also cautioned individuals against using the name, reputation, structures or goodwill of the campaign to create the impression that an official endorsement has been made when no such decision exists.
According to the statement, the political movement associated with Chairman Wontumi is supported by thousands of party members and supporters and operates through leadership, consultations and formal decisions.
“No individual, regardless of his proximity to the campaign, has the authority to speak on behalf of the entire team without a formal mandate to do so,” the campaign stated.
The team further urged members of the public, delegates and the media to distinguish between individual political preferences and official decisions of the Wontumi Campaign.
It said that whenever the campaign formally decides to support or endorse a candidate, the decision will be communicated through the appropriate official channels.
Until such communication is made, the campaign said, no individual statement should be interpreted as representing the collective position of Chairman Wontumi or the Wontumi Campaign Team.
The campaign concluded by reaffirming its commitment to responsible political engagement, party unity and the broader interests of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
