Investigation Remains Active – EOCO

by | Sep 23, 2026

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has issued a statement explaining its attempted arrest of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

According to EOCO, its officers attempted to arrest the MP in connection with an ongoing investigation.

The Office said it had previously invited Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026, but the invitations were not honoured.

EOCO said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law, describing Wednesday’s attempted arrest as one of the lawful steps taken in the matter.

The Office further explained that the situation escalated during the attempted arrest and the arrest was not successfully completed after officers assessed that a counter action would have endangered public safety.

EOCO also said it had identified two persons who, based on circumstances captured on video, are alleged to have actively intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape.

The Office said the conduct of the two individuals is being assessed and that it will take such lawful steps as may be appropriate.

EOCO further disclosed that Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.

The Office said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and will conduct its operations strictly within the Constitution and applicable laws.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” EOCO stated.

At the same time, the Office said it would not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution.

EOCO has assured the public that the investigation remains active and said it will carefully review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s incident, including available video evidence, to guide the next steps.

The Office said it remains determined to discharge its statutory responsibilities while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law and the institutional privileges of Parliament.
