Iran has announced that it will not take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing ongoing tensions and security concerns.
Iran’s Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, said the country will “under no circumstances” participate in the global tournament due to the current conflict involving the United States and Israel.
According to Iranian authorities, the escalating situation makes it impossible for the national team to safely travel and compete in the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite the announcement, football’s world governing body, FIFA, has not yet officially confirmed Iran’s withdrawal from the tournament.
Iran had already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, and discussions are expected to continue regarding the country’s final status and possible replacement if the withdrawal is confirmed.
