WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Replacing the Need for Phone Numbers

by | Oct 20, 2025

WhatsApp is testing a major new feature that could change the way users connect on the platform — the introduction of usernames. This update will allow people to find and message each other without sharing their phone numbers, marking a significant shift toward enhanced privacy and flexibility.

According to reports from tech media outlets including TechCrunch and LiveMint, the feature is currently being tested in beta versions of WhatsApp for Android. Once fully rolled out, users will be able to create unique usernames, similar to how platforms like Telegram and Instagram operate.

This development aims to give users greater control over their privacy. Instead of revealing personal phone numbers, users will soon be able to share just their username, making it easier to connect with new contacts safely — especially in professional or group settings.

Although WhatsApp accounts will still require a phone number for registration and verification, the username option will serve as a public identity for chatting. Reports suggest that WhatsApp is also working on a new contact management system that allows users to save contacts directly within the app, hinting at a full transition to username-based communication in the future.

As of now, the username feature is still under testing, and there is no official release date for the global rollout. However, industry experts believe this update could become one of WhatsApp’s most impactful privacy features in recent years.
