The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has officially received a senior delegation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at the Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra, marking a significant step in strengthening cooperation between the two law enforcement agencies.

The NYPD delegation visited Accra for high-level engagements aimed at enhancing operational collaboration, professional exchange, and the adoption of modern policing strategies. During the meeting at Police Headquarters, IGP Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) engaged the delegation in extensive discussions on contemporary policing challenges and opportunities for cooperation.

Central to the discussions were the use of technology in policing, including data-driven models, digital investigative tools, and integrated intelligence systems to support operational decision-making. The two sides also explored officer safety and welfare, emphasizing training, proper equipment, and institutional support systems to enhance operational effectiveness.

Police accountability and public trust were key topics, with the NYPD delegation sharing experiences on transparency, internal oversight, and community engagement, while the Ghana Police Service highlighted ongoing reforms and mechanisms to strengthen accountability within its ranks.

A proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two police services was reviewed, focusing on collaboration in training, information sharing, and joint investigations of transnational crimes. The delegation also held working meetings with key operational units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate, discussing investigative cooperation, intelligence coordination, and emerging transnational crime threats.

The visit included a tour of the Joint Operations Center (JOC), showcasing Ghana’s integrated command and control system used to coordinate nationwide policing operations and incident responses. One of the most significant outcomes of the visit was discussions on an officer exchange programme, which could see a senior NYPD detective stationed at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, while a senior Ghana Police Service officer could be embedded within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau in New York to strengthen operational collaboration and investigative partnerships.

The NYPD delegation also held courtesy meetings with the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Rolf Olson, focusing on national security coordination, intelligence sharing, and broader cooperation between Ghanaian and U.S. law enforcement agencies.

The visit underscores the growing partnership between the Ghana Police Service and the NYPD, highlighting shared commitment to modern policing practices, transnational crime prevention, and strengthening institutional collaboration.
