The Presidency has forwarded a number of petitions seeking the removal of the Special Prosecutor and the leadership of the Electoral Commission to the Chief Justice, Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has confirmed. According to him, the petitions were submitted by private individuals and groups and not initiated by the government.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that the President is constitutionally required to transmit such petitions to the Chief Justice once they are received. He said the petitions include complaints against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, her two deputies, as well as the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.

He stressed that the President plays no further role in the process after forwarding the petitions, as the next step lies with the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice is expected to review the petitions to determine whether a prima facie case has been established. If such a case is found, a committee may be constituted in line with constitutional and statutory provisions to investigate the allegations and make recommendations.

The Minister also clarified that the forwarding of the petitions does not amount to a determination of guilt and should not be interpreted as an attempt by the government to interfere with the work of independent constitutional bodies. He noted that the process is a routine constitutional requirement and urged the public to allow due process to take its course.
