Empowering Private Health Centres Is Key to Jobs and Global Standards — Africa Medical Tourism Council

by | Dec 16, 2025

Healthcare experts at the Africa Medical Tourism Council media engagement have called for greater support for private health centres, describing empowerment of the private sector as critical to job creation and improved healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, a consultant plastic surgeon and healthcare administrator, said employment creation should not be left solely to government, arguing that well-supported private health facilities can absorb more workers and strengthen the health system.

He noted that the approach to public healthcare infrastructure often falls short of global standards, observing that government-built hospitals are sometimes designed with a limited mindset that does not reflect international quality expectations. He said this perception must change if Ghana is to compete effectively in medical tourism.

Dr. Ampomah added that quality healthcare infrastructure not only improves patient outcomes but also attracts investment and medical tourists who are seeking reliable and affordable alternatives to treatment in Europe and Asia.

The Africa Medical Tourism Council reiterated its commitment to supporting Ghanaian hospitals to align with global standards through collaboration, advocacy, and innovation, while working with government agencies and private stakeholders to position Ghana as a trusted destination for medical care in Africa.
