A total of 118 former parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who contested the 2024 general elections have publicly declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The endorsement was announced at a press conference in Accra, where the former candidates stated that their decision followed extensive consultations within the party and careful consideration of the NPP’s future electoral prospects. They described Dr. Bawumia as the most prepared and credible candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on behalf of the group, former Sekondi Member of Parliament Andrew Egyapa Mercer said the endorsement was based on Dr. Bawumia’s experience in government, leadership qualities, and vision for the country. He stressed that the group believes Dr. Bawumia possesses the competence and nationwide appeal required to reunite the party and reclaim power in 2028.

The former candidates dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia was solely responsible for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, describing such assertions as unfair and unsupported by facts. They maintained that the loss was a collective outcome and should not be used to undermine his leadership credentials.

They further indicated that their support was voluntary and not influenced by inducement or pressure, emphasizing their commitment to party unity and success. The group expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia would emerge victorious in the upcoming primaries and called on party delegates to rally behind him for the good of the NPP.

The declaration has added momentum to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign as the NPP intensifies preparations for its presidential primaries, which will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
