Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, has confirmed that the government will roll out a fresh nationwide SIM-card registration exercise in the first quarter of 2026.
According to the Minister, the previous SIM re-registration campaign conducted under the former administration did not meet required technical and legal standards. He indicated that the biometric data collected previously were never properly cross-checked against the national identity records, rendering the earlier exercise invalid.
To ensure compliance and accuracy this time, a new Legislative Instrument (L.I.) has been prepared and will be laid before Parliament to provide a solid legal framework for the process. The government has also started procurement proceedings for a service-provider to conduct the registration under the new standards.
The forthcoming registration will include direct collaboration between the telecom sector, the regulatory authority, and the national identity body National Identification Authority (NIA), to ensure that SIM-card registrations are properly verified against the national database.
Mobile subscribers across Ghana are being urged to await further announcements for exact dates and registration procedures. Meanwhile, telcos are expected to bear the cost of the registration process to ease the burden on consumers.
