PURC Announces New Tariff Adjustments Effective January 1, 2026

by | Dec 3, 2025

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced an upward review of electricity and water tariffs, effective January 1, 2026. The Commission confirmed that electricity tariffs will rise by 9.86 percent, while water tariffs will increase by 15.92 percent, following its quarterly review of utility pricing.

According to the PURC, the adjustments were influenced by key economic indicators, including inflation, exchange rate movements, fuel costs, and the overall cost of power generation and water treatment. The Commission explained that the increment is necessary to ensure the continued sustainability of utility service providers, support maintenance and expansion projects, and guarantee stable and reliable service delivery to consumers nationwide.

The new tariffs will apply to all consumer categories, including residential, commercial, and industrial users. The PURC noted that without these adjustments, the financial health of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), and power producers could be further strained, potentially affecting the quality of service.

While the announcement has already sparked mixed reactions, some economic analysts caution that the increase may heighten the cost of living and put additional pressure on households and businesses. Others argue that the review is necessary to prevent a decline in utility infrastructure and service quality.

The PURC is expected to release more details on how the new tariffs will reflect on customer bills before the new rates take effect in January.
